Sødring was born in 1809 to an upper class family in Denmark. He was classically trained as an artist and specialized in landscape painting which he studied in Germany throughout his early life. Like the later French Impressionists, his style was ahead of its time in being romanticized and almost surreal. One of his contemporaries criticized his style by writing, ""the sugary, filthy Romance, with which the Artists I have seen treat the Rhine have always endowed it with."

This painting is suffused with a beautiful chrome green which accentuates the warm colors and almost uterine form of the hollow oak tree. The meticulously rendered limbs stand darkly against the sunny background and the low rolling turf. This painting could easily be mistaken for work of a much later period and is arresting in the mystery and drama created in such a seemingly simple landscape.
